Tin Mining

A chance sighting of the painting by Thomas Hart ‘St Just United Mines’ c. 1870 set me on a quest to research and paint from the Penwith coastline. During a recent painting residency on Cape Cornwall I set out to investigate the history of the Tin Mining industry in the area, which further provoked reading and research on the subject of the past histories of the relevant coastal landscapes and people in St Just in the 1800’s.

Essentially my paintings are achieved by walking the sites, making countless drawings in sketch books, note taking and observation.

‘Botallack  Cliffs ii’ is a recent work and one of many images of this particular body of paintings.
